Playing their first league game of the season at home to Hugenot High School from Wellington the South African College High School (SACS) 1stXV kept their supporters on the edge of their seats until after the hooter. Trailing 10-7 SACS set a lineout five metres from the Hugenot line with twenty seconds left on the clock. They rumbled forward and the maul went to ground. The ball was recycled and SACS drove over on the blindside to seal a last gasp win.
Â
The game was by no means a classic as both teams struggled to maintain continuity and structure. The SACS pack were under constant pressure in the scrums and conceded a number of tight-heads. Without a solid attacking platform SACS were forced to play off turnover ball. SACS put together some good phases of play and spent enough time in the opposition half to have wrapped the game up had they had a reliable kicker.
Â
Hugenot scored first via a penalty kick from centre Maree Kotze. SACS outside centre Godfrey Tandube had a couple of half-breaks which lead to a period of SACS pressure. SACS No. 8 and captain Matthew Mellville missed a relatively easy penalty kick. SACS scored to go ahead via lineout drive. Hooker Jason Dimio getting on the end of a classic rolling maul. Mellville converted to put SACS 7-3 ahead.
Â
In the second half both teams put together some nice passages of play but poor handling and forward passes meant neither team really threatening to score. When Hugenot eventually did come close they were awarded a penalty try for SACS not being back five metres from a tap penalty. Kotze converted to put Hugenot in the lead.
Â
Trailing by three with just under twenty minutes remaining SACS went in search of the winning score. SACS applied pressure but after missing a few easy kicks early on they opted inexplicably to turn down a number of kickable penalties, which could have seen them draw level and even go-ahead.
Â
Hugenot then broke out of their 22m-area as SACS dropped the ball when running another kickable penalty. Hugenot flyhalf Tiaan Eygelaar missing with a close range drop goal attempt which could have put SACS out of reach. From their SACS were able to move downfield and secure the winning score much to the jubilation of their supporters. Flank Chris Roberts was the hero but poor Hugenot, who did not deserve to lose, were left cursing the cruelty of sport.
