I guess when you arrive at a rugby match and you feel the need to put sunblock on, chances are you’re already feeling the heat. The Kings School from the UK arrived in Cape Town on Friday for the start of their rugby tour. Having practiced in icy conditions two weeks before, the U14, U15 and U16 boys that made the journey would no doubt have been a little shocked as they stepped off the plane into mid 30 degree weather.
For most part, Saturday was just as harsh for them. Apart from a few drops of rain, which were more of a tease than anything else, the day was hot, and the SACS players decided to turn the heat up even more.
Apart from the U14’s were it is clear our SACS men are still coming to grips with the standard and intensity of High School rugby, the two older age group teams showed glimpses of some real power and flair. The U15’s came up against an understrength Kings School team, and powered their way to a convincing win. The U16’s worked a little harder for their first points, but once they settled in, they ran in some long range tries and also walked away with a large victory margin. Both games were well over 50 points.
It was only the U14’s who lost, and I am sure this will provide another opportunity for the coaches to settle in on their best players, their combinations and their final game plans before the first “league” games in 2 weeks from now.
Well done to the Kings School, you played your hearts out in tough conditions.
