SACS Rugby Pre-Season
At professional level rugby is played all year round nowadays it seems. Like it or not the same culture has permeated the school environment. If SACS wants to compete with the best not only do we have to play against them but also train like them. While all boys at SACS are still required to perform academically and play a summer sport they now also have the added burden of rugby pre-season to contend with as well. Most of them love it as strength and conditioning has added benefits on the beach!
The 1stXV and U16A squads are training twice a week under the watchful eye of former Springbok strength and conditioning coach Steve McIntyre of RugbyIQ. In addition various 1stXV players are doing some individual skills work with Nick Maurer and Tiger Bax. The squad have taken it upon themselves to get together once a week for a game of social touch rugby as well which is a great team building initiative.
The U15A for 2015 are getting a real working over by their new mentor Mr. Maurer. They are currently training three times a week out on the field doing some strength work, some skills and the obligatory game of full field “Touchies” to keep the spirits up.
We are looking forward to welcoming the new Grade 8’s into the fold in January 2015. We are excited about the intake and will be hosting an information evening with the boys and their parents early in the new year.
Two exciting development are that we are busy negotiating with PUMA to be our kit supplier in 2015. We are quite far down the road and we look forward to a long relationship with their brand. In addition Grey High, who host Cape Schools Week in Port Elizabeth in June/July 2015, have mooted that the tournament be extended to include Under-15’s from next year as well. If this comes about we look forward to travelling east with two SACS Rugby teams.
Thanks to our dedicated Head of SACS Rugby, Barry van Selm, it never seems to sleeps but unfortunately it cannot run on fresh air. We are always looking for sponsors and in fact we are looking for an overall sponsor for SACS RUGBY at present. Please contact us if you are interested.
See you on the sidelines (or should we say) – in the gym!
